Comfort Food

Creamed tuna and peas on toast. This is truly one of my comfort foods. It transports me back to a safe haven of childhood. I can hear the creak of the wood burning stove as Dad puts the logs in, laughter, my mother calling my father "Duck," or "Alf" and even the clunking of the old water heater in the back room. Sounds of comfort and tastes of home. Those were good days and I miss them.
What is one of your comfort foods? What are some sounds that you remember from growing up?

My mom used to make me poached eggs on toast. I think she is probably the best poached egg maker in the world! Then there was macaroni and cheese with "red pepper" which was actually paprika.

Sounds of childhood; a cuckoo clock that never worked quite right, the clacking of the latches on our bedroom doors, and my favorite sound of all, my dad playing his harmonica.

That creamed tuna and peas is looking mighty tasty. :)

Funny thing, when I first looked at the picture I thought, "Oh, somebody else eats creamed tuna and peas too!" Then I realized it was you and laughed at myself.

I've never had creamed tuna and peas on toast, but I imagine it tastes about like tuna casserole, so I would like it.

My favorite food when I was a kid was our family's recipe for ham loaf. It's like a meatloaf, but made with ham and pork instead of beef. I recently tried making it a bit lighter, using ground turkey to replace some of the pork. It wasn't as good, but it was ok.

Comfort food...hmmm. When I was little, I loved spaghetti and meatballs. Also meatloaf and mashed potatoes. Still like meatloaf, but spaghetti only when in the mood!

One sound that I loved as a child was trains in the distance. There was a railroad not too far away and the train sound always seemed reassuring in some way.

The muffled voices of Mom and Dad talking after we were in bed for the night.

You just transported me back. I haven't thought of this dish for years and years.... As soon as I saw it I said oh my, that's what mom would give us when she forgot to defrost some meat!

Yes, it spells comfort!

Ice cream before bed stirred up to make it soft. :)

(James won't let us stir our ice cream. He's mean.)

Mmmmm, I love creamed tuna and peas on toast! I miss those old days too. I remember this was often made after church on Sunday nights.

I have lots of CURRENT comfort foods, but none that date back to home. My mom was a lot of things, but not a big cook.

One of my big favorites now is tomato sandwiches on toast. MMMMmmmm. In the summer, I eat them until I get sores in my mouth!
