Lovers...and a History Lesson

Here are my parents in the early 50's. I'm thinking they were engaged to be married...making it 1953. I was going to crop the picture...but decided not to because of my love of history. In the background is a picture of a grist flour mill located on Irondequoit Creek. It dates back to 1848 when the city of Rochester was quite well know for it's export of flour. My grandparents helped the owner run the mill and they also lived on it's premises.

Now this same mill is a fancy restaurant in the rochester area called The Daisy Flour Mill restaurant. I've never eaten there, but my parents did once and they got a complimentary tour of it (including the kitchen) because my father mentioned to the waiter that he had worked and lived there in his younger years. Nowadays Rochester is called The Flower City...but it once was The Flour City.

That's really neat. I can make out your mom's face there, but your dad looks really different to me.

At first glance I had no clue who those people were! (Where did you get that photo?) I do recognize the mill from other pictures and, yes, I guess that is Mom and Dad.

Is The Daisy Flour Mill still open? I thought the restaurant had closed down.

Hmmmm...maybe the restaurant is closed. That would really spoil this post! Booooooo!

Rachel gave me this picture. She found it in a box of slides she took from Grandpa's basement the year we were cleaning out his house.

The restaurant owners claimed bankruptcy a couple a couple of years ago, right after Dave and I purchased a gift certificate for his parents from there. They never got to use it, and we never got our money back. I don't know if it ever reopened under new ownership.

Funny - I was just mentioning to one of my kids the other day about how they changed Rochester from the Flour City to the Flower City! I ate there once... All I remember was a HUGE crash and my FIL yelling, "It wasn't me!!!" and being slightly embarrassed!
